Gatlinburg Trail

July 3, 2023

If you’re looking for an easy hiking experience, then The Gatlinburg Trail is the perfect place for you, especially in July. This 1.3 mile hike is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. It is a scenic path that is suitable for hikers of all skill levels. Uniquely, it is one of two trails in the park where dogs are allowed. It was a deceptively cloudy day, in between torrential storms, and the temperature was warm. As soon as I stepped onto the trail, I was surrounded by the lush greenery of the forest, and the sound of the birds singing was a calming balm.

The Gatlinburg Trail follows alongside the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, and water can be seen and heard rushing along the whole trail. The river was flowing rapidly and, in some places, had rapids that added excitement to the walk. One of the things I loved about this trail is that it was relatively level, making it a relaxing hike. The trail is filled with a variety of foliage, including beautiful wildflowers, and shade trees provided an excellent refuge from the sun’s rays. At the midway point, there is an old fireplace, where hikers can take a break, sit down, relax, and enjoy the scenery. It is the perfect place to stop and have a picnic or even read a book, and admire the surroundings. Unlike other trails, you will see a lot of people, as Gatlinburg remains a popular tourist attraction.

The end of the trail leads to Sugarlands Visitor Center, where you can find educational exhibits about the park’s wildlife and history.

Total mileage is 2.6 miles.
