Some places are so special they make your heartstrings twinge with delight. The Roan Mountains have and always will make me swell with happiness. Just outside of Bakersville, N.C., the Roans rise above the valley with a range that is as beautiful as any place on the eastern seaboard.
It is a extraordinary place with longing views, huge rhododendron gardens, spruce-fir trees wafting in the air, and tough hikes. It is a place that I always love to come; it is the place that I asked my wife to marry me.
There are three peaks over 6000 feet as part of the South Beyond 6000 challenge: Roan High Bluff, Roan High Knob, and Grassy Ridge Bald.
Total mileage is 11.9 miles.
