Oconaluftee River Trail is an easy, level trail located near Cherokee (Qualla Boundary) and the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. From a turn of the (past) century farm that was transported and reconstructed near the center, the trail follows the river before reaching the boundary. Elk, mountain dog hobble and clear skies were abundant on a cold, cold day.
We had originally planned to hike Forney Ridge Trail near Clingmans Dome, but the snow and ice closed the road off Newfound/Hwy. 441, so this low elevation hike had to suffice.
Expect to see joggers, families, old men taking pictures of elk and even dogs (they are allowed here). It is a nice trail for the family.
Total mileage is 3.2 miles.
