According to the U.S. Forest Service, Mount Pisgah’s name is derived from the late 18th century: “a minister climbed (or viewed, depending on the version one accepts) this mountain and, considering the fertile French Broad River Valley below it, named it after that from which Moses first viewed the Israelites’ Promised Land.”
The Mount Pisgah trail is short, but steep in parts, though it is not unmanageable for even the smallest child (Emily easily carried a seventh month old Alice to the top). The summit provides wonderful views of Asheville, Cold Mountain, Shining Rock Wilderness, and Looking Glass Rock. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful, lush green, flower filled trail and beautiful panoramas.
Total mileage is 2.6 miles.
