Flat Creek Trail

With the promise of changing leaves, the family and I hiked the Flat Creek Trail (2.6 miles) in the GSMNP on a bright fall day. This is an family friendly trail, that winds between Heintooga Bald and Balsam Mountain with three simple creek crossings.

I love North Carolina in the fall, and love it so much more when my family and I can spend it outside together.

Total mileage is 5.78 miles.

  1. Beautiful trip report and photos. I have always liked that area. It is special. Have you ever climbed down to see Flat Creek Falls from its base? Obviously not the time to do it with the baby along. There is no trail to the base, but it can be done. It is well worth the effort.

    1. Thank you so much! The trail was special. My wife kept commenting that it felt like a very old path. We ran into a couple that mentioned the falls and on the way back I went down a manway to what presumably was the falls but stopped short when I saw it would be too steep for the girls. Thanks for reading!

      1. You are welcome. Sincerely meant. You are correct. You were on the manway to the falls. Once to the water you must cross over the stream to reach the base. The side you approach from .. the terrain is too steep on that side. Opposite side is not “easy”, but can be done.
